It all started with a hand written beauty recipe written in the 17th century and rediscovered by Silvergage founder Alexandra Gage in 2009. It was tucked between pages in a first edition of John Gerard’s ‘Herball’ in the library at Firle Place. ‘Herball’ was the first extensive collation of information about the medicinal qualities of plants and their benefits. It was botanists and physicians like Gerard who catalogued the historical art of herbalism and made it accessible to a wider audience.
The beautiful simplicity of the found herbal tonic recipe, is that it used only a few ingredients chosen for quality and potency. Taking inspiration from this recipe, Silvergage’s philosophy on a beauty routine is simple, healthy, tuned into the natural world and the cycle of its seasons.

THE HERB GARDEN
FIRLE PLACE
EAST SUSSEX
The Herb Garden at Firle Place houses the raw ingredients that inspire our formulations. Alexandra Gage created it in a muddy, disused acre section of the walled gardens at Firle Place in 2008. Inspired by Alex’s interest in art history, painting and Newton’s colour theory along with the healing effects of colour therapy, the garden is laid out in swathes and blocks of colour that also reference the chakras and the body.
The garden is the source of our fresh ingredients and houses an extensive array of medicinal herbs which are tended to without chemicals to enhance their natural efficacy straight from garden to counter-top.
The fresh herbs are picked seasonally at the peak of their potency and then distilled into flower waters and essential oils using a copper alembic. This process ensures the therapeutic value of the herbs used are at their most powerful and vital. The use of energetics in the range is a process Alex is constantly researching and developing with the help of her trusty silver bowl.
